Police lobbed teargas at Jubilee supporters who turned in folds to attend Uhuru Kenyatta’s coronation ceremony on Tuesday at Kasarani Stadium.

The supporters donned in Jubilee attire; either a cap, branded Jubilee t-shirt or simply an outfit with Jubilee colors tried to force their way into the stadium.

The stampede left several people with injuries and they were rushed to hospital while others got first aid from paramedics already at the stadium.

Security, however, remains tight.

Everyone getting past the main gate is undergoing through security search. Police on horseback are keeping perimeter security.

The stadium has a capacity to hold 60, 000 people.

With the mammoth turnout, big screens have been mounted outside the stadium from where the rest of Kenyans can follow proceedings of the coronation ceremony.

The swearing-in must be held not before 10a.m and not later that 2pm.

The Presidential oath will be administered by Chief registrar of the Judiciary Ann Amadi in presence of Chief Justice David Maraga or Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu.

In other news surrounding Uhuru’s swearing-in, police in Embakasi sealed off Jacaranda grounds where NASA leaders were expected to hold a memorial service for slain supporters by police a fortnight ago.

Police formed a ring around the grounds and two water cannons were on standby.

Bouts of teargas also rent the air, an indication of police dispersing some of NASA’s supporters who may have turned up at the grounds waiting for the rally.

Garbage and faeces had been dumped at the grounds, maybe to stop the rally disguised as a memorial service from taking place.

But ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale said in a tweet: “Even if they pour human poop or garbage, Kenyans will be at Jacaranda today. They will smell human waste but the memorial will go on.”
