We expect political dialogue from you, nothing less, NASA tells Uhuru

The opposition has insisted its talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta must border on political and electoral justice, nothing less.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has on two occasions maintained he will not engage NASA in any political talk.

Uhuru on Saturday was categorical he will only engage the opposition on issues touching on the growth and development of the country.

He said for any political dialogue, the Raila Odinga led outfit will have a sit-down with his deputy William Ruto in 2022.

“Those pushing to have talks with me should know time is gone, they can wait for 2022 and talk with [Deputy President] William Ruto, right now we are busy serving Kenyans,” said the President.

In his speech during Jamhuri day, he invited the opposition for talks only bordering in economic growth of the country.

“As I have stated before, as President of all Kenyans, I am willing and commit to engage all Kenyans, and all Kenyan leaders, including my worthy competitors, irrespective or their religious or ethnic affiliation, in fashioning this paradigm shift,” he said.

This, says NASA’s protégées, was a call inspired by insincerity.

NASA’s National Coordination Committee chairman Johnson Muthama told Daily Nation on Wednesday that, “dialogue must be on the outstanding political issues.”

“There cannot be development if a government lacks popular support of the people,” he added.

NASA argues that Kenya’s electoral and governance system have taken a southward trend any dialogue between the two rivaling political parties should be centred on this.

ANC party, an affiliate of NASA said Uhuru’s pronouncement on no-political talk is naïve.

“It is naive for a President who is a politician to say that people will not talk about politics,” said ANC Secretary General Barrack Muluka.
