Kenyan Mom, Newborn Held Hostage In a Dubai Hospital For Unpaid Bill

By Jamhuri News Reporter

A Dubai hospital is said to be holding hostage a Kenyan mother and her newborn baby demanding that she clears a huge bill that she owes the hospital.

New York Post Reports that Ruth Wambui Mwaura prematurely delivered a baby boy at 25 weeks in February and the parents are now asked to clear a bill totaling to 294,000 AED (US$80,041) before they can leave the hospital to celebrate the joy of their newborn.

Ms. Wambui, who is currently out of work, went into labor while vacationing in the UAE and she had to be rushed to the emergency room. Her baby came just a day after being admitted to the hospital.

Baby Kiama has fought his way to full health despite the challenges facing his parents. The mother, whose partner is a petrol station attendant in Kenya, said their plan was to have their son born in Kenya.

”We certainly were not prepared for something like this. We could not have imagined in our wildest dreams that we would be in this situation.” The mother said, adding that the dad only makes 1,600 AED ($436) in a month.

The hospital is yet to comment on the matter.
