Presidential aspirant Solomon Gichira is a man who has stirred controversy after headlining in the media that he tried to commit suicide after IEBC rejected him.

Many knew him not until the report went round and now, he is a personality known all too well in the country.

However, Gichira’s political journey begun one night in August last year when he woke up in the middle of the night and decided to run for The Presidency, the Standard reports.

“I was surprised when he told me his plans, but I told him we will discuss it when we wake up,” his wife Miriam Nduge recalls.

In the morning, he explained to his wife about his ambitions for the country’s top seat and without questioning him at all, she pledged to support him unconditionally.

The 46-year old says that he decided to run for the seat in order to make the country a better place.

He narrates that having been born in a family of five and brought up by a single mother, life can be challenging if the right leadership is not in place.

“My childhood was tough. I have had the desire to change lives of people going through what I went through,” says Gichira.

However, he cites, people have not taken him seriously. He would receive confirmation messages that he was vying for an MCA seat.

“They [Registrar of Political Parties] would send me confirmation messages that I am running for MCA. It is like nobody took me vying for the presidency seriously.”

Though he is facing charges for attempted suicide, creating public disturbance and malicious damage of property, he says he will give Kenya alternative leadership.

“I know Kenyans are yearning for a change in leadership, and I am that change. Wait till they hear my manifesto and plans, they will think I am mad, but I am doing it for the poor.”

Gichira is a graduate of the University of Nairobi.
