Interior ministry has banned NASA’s anti-IEBC protests in the city centre alongside Kisumu and Mombasa.

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i issued the directive on Thursday at Harambee House.

He cited Section 56 of the Public Order Act which cushions Kenyans together with their properti9es against destruction.

This follows a spate of anti-IEBC demonstrations staged by NASA supporters in the past few weeks.

Matiang’i in his decision said the National Security Advisory Committee reached the decision after signs of “imminent danger” posed by the protest.

The CS also said the the Kenya Private Sector Alliance is in great hue and cry over fall of businesses occasioned by the protest.

“We cannot go on this way. It is unfortunate to see people’s cars being smashed, property being destroyed in the guise of a peaceful demonstrations. We must respect the law,” said the CS as Daily Nation quotes.

However, he set the record straight that directive was not in any way curtailing NASA from picketing.

This directive comes a day after Siaya Senator and Raila’s point man James Orengo announced daily anti-IEBC demos starting next week.

NASA supporters have been hitting the streets in protests thrice a week.

However, in Wednesday’s demos (yesterday), looting occurred in the CBD while some vehicles were smashed.

The CS said they will charge NASA CEO Norman Magaya for the looting and destruction of property since he is the one who called for the demos.

“We shall prefer charges against him because he is the one that called the demos, after we have quantified the extent of the damage,” charged the CS.

He said Magaya was in contravention of the law.

Matiang’i asked those whose businesses were looted or property destroyed to report to police.

NASA is pushing for reforms at the IEBC including resignation of CEO Ezra Chiloba.
