Koome: Expect ‘heavy and big’ police deployment during Supreme Court ruling

Security within the precincts of the Supreme Court will be above board on Monday when the judges once again make a ruling on a second Presidential petition.

Nairobi County Police Commander Japeth Koome on Sunday said they have put in place elaborate security measures as Supreme Court judges give a ruling on the petition challenging President Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory.

Koome said there be will heavy police presence in and around the Supreme Court.

“We have made the biggest and heaviest police deployment as witnessed in the recent past locally,” he said on Sunday according to the Star.

Uhuru’s victory was challenged by ex-Kilome MP Harun Mwau and Njonjo Nue of ICJ Kenyan Chapter together with Khelef Khalifa-Muhuri Chairman.

The two petitioners argued that Uhuru’s victory is void because IEBC failed to stop the election even after the withdrawal of NASA’s Raila Odinga.

Through lawyer Julie Soweto, they told he judges led by Chief Justice David Maraga that low voter turnout that marred the polls affected the final outcome of the results.

But the respondents, Uhuru Kenyatta and IEBC watered down the arguments telling the court that IEBC should only conduct nominations in case of a general election or in case the office of the President fell vacant.
