Britain has warned its citizens against walking in the streets of Nairobi and Mombasa in a new travel advisory issued on Friday.
UK in a statement urged its citizens planning to travel and those already living in Kenya to keep off from walking in the streets of the two cities citing increased cases of muggings and theft.
“Foreigners are not generally targeted, but incidents of violent crime have resulted in the death of several British nationals in recent years,” read part of the statement.
Further, it read, “Bag snatching is common in transports hubs like bus stations, railway stations and airports.
“Mugging, kidnapping, car-jacking and armed robbery occur regularly, particularly in Nairobi, Mombasa and other large cities.”
In January there was an upsurge of crime in the city’s Central Business District which promoted Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to call to action the anti-mugging squad.
A day after the squad tandem with the Kenya Police got down to business, several arrests were made.
Sonko blamed the upsurge of muggings and theft in the city of some politicians. He said the gangs had “political” backing.
They targeted people leaving ,banks, mobile money shops and members of the public in general.
