Ababu backs petition seeking dissolution of 7 counties supporting People’s Assembly formation

A lobby group perceived to be Jubilee-sided will present a petition to Parliament seeking dissolution of seven counties that have passed NASA’s motion for formation of People’s Assembly.

The outfit, Council of Professionals in Kenya led is led by former Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba.

In a presser on Thursday, Namwamba said the petition is also pushing for total cut off of national revenue in the seven counties by the National Treasury.

He said they passed a motion which is illegal and in contravention of the law.

“The idea of forming people’s assemblies is in capitalist economies and dangerous for the peace, stability and democracy of a nation,” said the ex-MP according to the Star.

“It will also result in misuse of funds because those sitting in the assembly will be paid,” he added.

Homa Bay, Siaya, Kisumu, Migori, Vihiga, Busia, Kakamega and Makueni are among counties that have passed the motion already.

Ababu also said that: “The National Treasury should stop disbursing funds to these counties because the idea is a waste of taxpayers’ money and the Bill was done without consultation with the very people who selected MCAs to county assemblies.”

NASA is pushing for rebellion against President Uhuru Kenyatta through the People’s Assembly which is yet o be established.

However, with the passing of its motion by majority of the county assemblies, the People’s Assembly will be formed.

But political analyst Wesley Simba said such changes could only be made through a referendum and not a petition.

“Cutting off funding to these counties would amount to discrimination and will even create sharper political divisions should the National Assembly and Senate agree to stop the disbursement.”
