Another Kenyan has been shortlisted for the 2020 Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize.

Last year, Peter Tabicihi, a mathematics and physics teacher at Keriko Mixed Secondary School won the coveted prize.

Ms Linah Anyango from Changamwe Secondary School in Mombasa, reports Daily Nation, is among the top 50 poised to clinch the prize.

The chemistry and biology teacher was nominated from 12,000 applications made by 140 countries.

She is credited with starting a music club at the school which has, hitherto, been a cultural hub thereby reducing radicalization in the coast where it is prevalent.

“This has worked wonders. There were no girls in physics classes in 2017, but there were 22 by last year. The girls have also gained the courage to take part in Stem fairs and competitions,” the organisers of the award said.

Last year, one of two of her students went qualified to reach the National Science Fair. One of then clinched the first position and went on to represent Kenya I the Eskom Fair in South Africa.

Besides her wit in sciences, she has trained in ICT courtesy of Microsoft who appointed her as the Microsoft moderator and trainer in Kenya.

The Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize is in its sixth year and seeks to appreciate one teacher from across the world making a tremendous contribution to the education sector and in the society too.

Tabichi, whose glory has been all over the world since the award, said that “Ms Anyango is doing an incredible job and I wish her all the best.”
