Congress Woman Karen Bass to lead US Democrats in monitoring next week’s polls in Kenya

US Congress woman Karen Bass will co-lead an election monitoring delegation with the US Democratic Party in Kenya.

Bass represents a section of Loss Angeles and is the Vice-chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The Congress woman, 63, is a senior Democratic Member of the Africa sub-committee of the US House of Representatives.

She will also be accompanied by five US Congress staff workers who will form part of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) observation team.

NDI spokesman Jerry Hartz said yesterday that the Institute will deploy 30 of its members to work alongside 7, 000 election observers deployed by Kenya’s Election Observation Group.

The NDI International Delegation headed by the former commissioner of political affairs for the African Union Aisha Laraba Abdullahi will work together with the Carter Centre led by former US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Carter Centre has sent in 80 election observers for the August 8 polls.

Other members of the NDI team are: Prof Attahiru Njega-former National Chair of Nigeria’s Independent Electoral Commission, former Justice of South African Constitutional Court Yvonne Mokgoro and former Republican Governor for the State of New Jersey Christine Todd Whitman.
