IEBC slaps 8 candidates with sh10.5 million fines for electoral misconduct

IEBC’s Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee has slapped sh10.5 million fines to 8 candidates for campaign chaos.

The candidates include three for governor seat and five for MP seat.

The eight risk being disqualified from the race should they fail to pay the fine by 4 pm today.

Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka (Jubilee) and was fined sh1 million.

He was found to have breached the Electoral Code of Conduct by abetting violence against his main challenger, Ford Kenya’s Wycliffe Wangamati.

Less than a month ago, he was fined a similar amount for the same reason.

The two were barred from conducting any campaigns with just three days remaining before heading to the polls.

Mandera Governor Ali Roba was fined sh1 million for violence that broke out last week when President Uhuru Kenyatta toured the county for a Jubilee rally.

His challenger vying on Economic Freedom Party Hassan Noor was slapped with a sh3 million for abetting violence.

The committee argued that he by not being a Jubilee candidate; he should not have been at the rally.

Marsabit Governor Ukur Yatani of Frontier Alliance Party was ordered to pay sh3 million for violence that broke out on July 26 when President Uhuru Kenyatta visited the county for a Jubilee rally.

His challenger Mohammed Mohamoud will pay sh1 million fine.

The committee chaired by Wafula Chebukati has so far fined 23 candidates for electoral misconduct.
