Ex-Governor denies ‘stealing’ county government’s Sh2.5M generator found installed in his hotel

Police in Tharaka Nithi County have launched investigations into an incident where a sh2.5 million generator belonging to the county government disappeared and later found at a hotel owned by the county’s ex-governor, Samuel Ragwa.

The generator was on Friday found at Sammerton Hotel in Kathwana market well installed as power back-up.

Police Commander in the County Mary Omari said police had been tipped off by a county employee.

“County officers have reported that the generator at the former governor Samuel Ragwa’s Sammerton hotel is a county government property and we have commenced investigation,” said the police boss according to Nairobi News.

Contacted in regard to the matter, the former governor did not deny that the generator belonged to the county government. He said it was not a stolen item.

He said it was installed at his hotel early in the year to provide power during a county event because there was power outage.

Sammerton Hotel is just 500 metres from the headquarters of the Tharaka Nithi County Government.

“The generator belongs to the county government but was installed at the hotel to provide power during a county staff training by Ahadi Kenya Trust.”

Ragwa said he had even contacted the county secretary Dr Fredrick Kamundi seeking to make arrangements to return the generator but was then informed that police were at his hotel searching for the stolen generator.

The generator and a sh10, 000 printer are among items donated by Ahadi Kemya Trust during his tenure as the governor.
