More than 600 Facebook low-cost internet hotspots have been switched on in the country.

The US tech giant launched the project in March and is rolling out low-cost internet in Kenya through their local partner, Surf Kenya.

The initiative dubbed Express Wi-Fi service was first rolled out in Nairobi and later in Eldoret, Naivasha, Nakuru, Mtwapa, Kisumu and Mombasa.

These are some of the major towns in the country.

Zetech University, KCA University and Technical University of Kenya are some of the areas where the Express Wi-Fi hotspots can be found in the city.

Surf Kenya plans to set up more hotspots in Coastal, Western and Central Kenya towns.

Surf Kenya managing Director Mark Summer noted that the project has been a success so far.

“Our success in the market to date is that we are offering high speed, high quality internet hotspot service at a very affordable rate to consumers-particularly in public areas near where they work and go for entertainment,” said Summer as quoted by Daily Nation.

“Additionally, our local retailer partners who host and sell our services have made it easy to get the news to our customer base that we are available in their locations.”

Compared to other internet providers in the country, Facebook internet is cheap.

Its daily internet bundles cost sh10 for 40mb, sh20 for 100mb, sh50 for 100mb and sh300 for 500mb.

It can be purchased from M-Pesa or directly from the firm’s agents.
