George Kariuki, a bus driver operating between Nairobi CBD and Githurai 44, is the latest sensation in town after he helped a woman deliver safely in his matatu on Thursday.

The expectant mother, Philomena Mbithi boarded the Githurai 44 bound bus from the CBD and was to alight at Safari Park but her water broke and pangs of labor pain started at Roasters.

She requested the conductor to stop at Safari Park so that she would proceed to Neema Hospital but it was too late as the water was already broken, a sign the baby would come anytime soon.

Kariuki decided to drive to Roysambu-hardly a minute away from Safari Park and the conductor of the bus, Richard Maina alighted and tried to seek for help from fellow women at the busy Roysambu bus stage but none of them offered help.

George upon seeing this; gathered all his courage and assumed the duties of a midwife. He helped Philomena deliver a bouncing baby boy and later rushed her and the new born to Neema Hospital.

“When I saw that the water is broken and the child’s head popped out and I knew he would hit the floor. I told God to give me courage and I spread my arms to receive the new bundle of joy,” he said when contacted by Jamhuri News.

The new born son now named Raymond Kyalo and mother were rushed to Neema Hospital where they were admitted for observation.

Kariuki also contacted Philomena’s husband, Benjamin Mbithi who was at in Narok and informed him.

While at her hospital bed, Philomena could not hide her joy, owing the life of her son to Kariuki.

“It was humbling to see what he did for me and my son,” she said.

Her husband too thanked the driver for his sacrifice.

Kariuki’s act brings a brighter side of the matatu industry which has for a long time, been touted to be ruthless and unforgiving.

Kenyans on social media in reaction to Kariuki’s heroic deed said he deserves an award.

Stella Nyawira Mbau said on Facebook, “We need to reward him, such a good gesture, “while PK Ngugi noted that “[An] award is required of him, a real hero, may the good lord bless the man.”
