IEBC’s enhanced measures to ensure credible repeat elections

IEBC has been working to meet Supreme Court’s requirements for free and fair repeat elections on October 26th. Among measures taken by the commission include involving all major telecom providers in providing services in the transmission of results from different areas in the country.

Safaricom will be the primary service provider in transmitting results in Thursday’s repeat elections. The company will provide SIM cards which will be installed in each of the 45,000 results transmission kits in a bid to improve the process.

Safaricom will serve 22 counties while Airtel will be manning 14 counties and Telkom Kenya 11 counties respectively.

Each provider will provide services in areas where they have the strongest signal.

The IEBC has also standardized all its results declaration forms, and has provided the coordinates of all polling stations, with a clear provision of a results path and a gazetted complementary mechanism to be followed should the kits fail to send results from the gazetted polling stations.

The electoral commission has also reconfigured all 45,000 kits which include three back up kits.

Other measures taken by IEBC ahead of Thursday’s repeat elections include enhancement of security at Bomas of Kenya which will serve as the national tallying center. The commission has invested in new doors to secure a room at the auditorium where the Chairman used to meet with commissioners during the elections.

A 60 member call-center has also been established to ensure efficient communication between the team at the national tallying center and returning officers in all constituencies.
