Government will charge counties that passed NASA’s motion to form People’s Assembly.

Government Spokesperson Eric Kiraithe said the county assemblies have contravened the law by diverting public resources to the wrong course.

Kiraithe said public resources meant for development were put into wrong use by the county assemblies when they held sessions to debate the passing of the motion.

“MCAs in some counties are wasting public resources, debating and passing motions not supported by the constitution. You can sit anywhere with your friends and declare yourself the Pope as long as you’re not using public resources,” averred Kiraithe Thursday in a presser in Nairobi as quoted by the Star.

County assemblies that have already passed this motion include: Siaya, Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay, Busia, Vihiga, Makueni and Kilifi.

His pronouncement comes a few days after a High Court in Kitui temporarily stopped all the 47 counties from debating the motion to approve formation of People’s Assembly.

The case will be heard on January 25 next year.

Raila Odinga, the NASA chief, is banking his hopes on establishment of the People’s Assembly to “liberate” the country.

Among the many roles of the People’s Assembly-another wing of the opposition will be to push for electoral reforms, constitutional review and rebelling against President Uhuru Kenyatta.

A technical team within the People’s Assembly will review the Constitution and draft proposals including change to a Parliamentary system.

This, they say, will address the evils of exclusion, tribalism and corruption that have been encouraged by the Presidential system of governance Kenya currently enjoys.

NASA wants the country to hold fresh polls on February 9 next year.
