Lionel Richie, Naomi Campbell lead international celebrities for charity drive in Kibera slums

Celebrities Naomi Campbell, Halle Berry and Maggie Q have launched a philanthropic drive by selling their high-end tote designer bags to feed and educate children in Kibera slums.

Children in Kibera are among the hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic as the government-imposed cessation of movement in Nairobi, Nakuru, Machakos, Kajiado and Kiambu.

Berry and Maggie Q are Hollywood actresses while Campbell is a celebrated British model.

Together with Los Angeles Art and luxury fashion retailer Church Boutique and the eco-fashion house Ministry of Tomorrow (MOT), they have a charity drive dubbed ‘Art for Education’.

MOT has a reputation of designing exclusive bags and accessories that are of eco-luxury vegan bags standard and are now looking at canvas tote bags. The bag with artistic painting expressions of each celebrity involved in the project.

They celebrities will auction these tote bags in New York in an art auction event that will be attended by other celebrities in June and the proceeds wired back to Kibera slums through Chema Center.

A tote bag has a market value of Ksh108,000. The final bid accepted on the 16th of the same month.

The opening minimum bid for each one-of-a-kind celebrity-designed bag will begin at 1,000 dollars (Sh108,000) with the aim of raising 100,000 dollars (Sh11 million) which will all be channeled to Chema’s accounts.

“We believe that luxury is a privilege that comes with the responsibility to care for others in need and therefore we are thrilled to collaborate with MOT to do what we can to make a difference in the lives of children born into challenging circumstances,” stated Rodney Burns, the Church Boutique founder according to Nairobi News.

A display of the bags will start on May 19 and end on May 26 at the Church boutique headquarters in Hollywood.

Other international celebrities taking part in this initiative are American legendary comedian and actor Eddie Murphy, Lionel Richie, RnB star Usher Raymond, actor, musician, and model Zoe Kravitz alongside her musician cum actor father Lenny Kravitz.
