There are no plans to scrap Nairobi county government and place the city under the administration of the national government, says Governor Mike Sonko.

Earlier reports had indicated that there was a plan to expand the city to a metropolitan by hiving off parts of Kiambu, Kajiado and Machakos Counties.

However, according to the Star, Sonko said that this was not the case.

He said that his administration will work closely with the national government.

“During my inauguration, I was clear that because Nairobi is an international hub, I will partner with the national government in implementing various projects to ensure that Nairobi residents receive services,” said the Governor as quoted by the Star.

Former Murang’a Senator Kembi Gitura had proposed scrapping Nairobi County Government and revert it to the Nation Government.

A Cabinet Secretary in-charge of Nairobi Metropolitan was to be appointed.

Sonko added that he will partner with the national government in undertaking major infrastructural projects.

A railway line running from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the city centre and construction of overpasses in the city are among the major projects the county will undertake in partnership with the national government.

“It is in the law that issues like public private partnerships, borrowing and many others require partnership with the national government,” said the Governor.
