Embattled lawyer Miguna Miguna left Dubai for Canada yesterday under heavy escort by UAE police.

Reports indicate he boarded an Air Canada flight AC 057 which left Dubai International Airport a few minutes to midnight.

Miguna was deported by the Kenyan government on March 28 after a three-day stand-off with the state over his citizenship.

When he arrived at JKIA on March 26 at around 2:30pm, the fiery lawyer refused to hand over his Canadian passport for stamping as is required.

What followed was high-level drama as efforts to deport him on the same night hit a snag. He refused to board a Dubai-bound Emirates plane.

He was locked up in what he later described as a tiny toilet at the Airport’s Terminal 2 area until Wednesday when he was hounded to another Emirates Airline plane bound for Dubai.

On Thursday morning when he arrived in Dubai, he claimed he had been sedated by Kenyan authorities and the sedatives made him feel sickly.

Yesterday, Sheikh Khalid, a senior government official in Dubai escorted Miguna to get proper medical tests and treatment.

Miguna through his social media handles praised this act terming it humane and at the same time castigated Kenyan authorities for “barbaric assault, torture and chemical poisoning.”

It is yet to be seen what happens next in the question of Miguna’s citizenship now that he is back in Canada.

Miguna is reportedly said to have automatically lost his citizenship in 1998 when he became a Canadian citizen.

The Kenyan Constitution at the time did not allow dual citizenship. He is required to apply afresh though he has vowed not to undertake any new application for Kenyan citizenship.
