Kenya Airways (KQ) can now operate direct flights to the United States.

The Department of Transportation granted KQ a permit for operation of a direct flight from Kenya to America effective from September 5.

KQ had early this year made a plea to have US allow it operate direct flights.

In June the Department of Transportation recommended that KQ be granted the permit if there were no public objections.

The Department further gave US President Donald Trump a 61-day window to disapprove the permit if he had any reservations about it.

However, he did not raise any objections by the time the window period expired on Tuesday.

A foreign air carrier permit is what KQ was granted.

The permit allows the airline “to engage in: Scheduled and charter foreign air transportation of persons, property, and mail from any point or points behind Kenya, via any point or points in Kenya and any intermediate points, to any point or points in the United States and beyond,” cites Business Daily.

KQ will now comply with stipulated regulations before the first Kenya-US direct flight at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
