Jubilee government’s pledge made by President Uhuru Kenyatta to increase budgetary funding for education in Kenya has been revived by American pop star Selena Gomez in a fit of anger.
While in a visit to Kenya in December 2019 where she toured schools under construction through WE Organization collaboration, Uhuru promised to increase funding towards the education from the current 17 percent to 30 percent.
The American pop star took to her Instagram page where she passionately explained to her fans the plight of students in Kenyan schools.
“Hey guys it’s Selena, I just got back from an incredible trip to Kenya where I had the opportunity to meet with remarkable young people and teachers, who are fighting for the right to a free, quality and inclusive education. However, countless students in Kenya are not receiving a quality education. Including the 59 percent of girls who are not even going to school,” She said at the time.
“As a result young people across the country and particularly the poorest and most marginalized are missing out on critical opportunities. In response to your calls last year, at the Global citizen festival in South Africa, Kenyan president Kenyatta committed to increasing spending on education. From 17 percent to an impressive 30 percent of the national budget. But we haven’t seen progress or received an update on this commitment yet. So we need to make sure its front of mind for the president and minister of education and it’s delivered upon” She added.
In 2018, Uhuru was called out by various people from around the world to address the appalling state of schools in Kenya. The president responded by pledging to do more in facilitating education in Kenya through a live televised presser.
