447 coronavirus cases confirmed in 24 hours as Kenya approaches 9,000 mark

Kenya on Thursday recorded the highest ever cases of COVID-19.

In his daily brief, Heath CS Mutahi Kagwe in Mombasa announced 447 new cases in the last 24 hours bringing the total number to 8,975 cases.

A total of 3,803 samples was tested bringing cumulative samples tested since March to 200,311.

257 are male and 167 are female. The youngest is one-year-old and the oldest is 88.

Another 64 patients were discharged, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 2,657.

Sadly, four more people lost their loves bringing the death toll to 174.

As the number of cases increase, a report on a study conducted by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics cited that 62.2 percent of Kenyans have shunned the use of public transport over fear of contracting the virus.

The survey on the Socioeconomic Impact of Covid-19 on Households Report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics was conducted between May 30 and June 6.

The report, released on Thursday, painted a grim picture on the effects of coronavirus pandemic on the economy and livelihood.

It showed that 37 percent of Kenyans were unable to pay their rent for May.
