President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined Kenyans and Catholics in mourning Eldoret Diocese Bishop Cornelius Korir.

Bishop Korir, 67, passed on Monday morning upon arrival at St Luke’s Hospital.

A worker at the church said he developed some complications and was quickly rushed to hospital but he died on arrival.

“He developed complications at his Elgon View home and was taken to the hospital but unfortunately passed on,” he told Daily Nation.

He had been scheduled to be flown to Karen Hospital for specialized treatment later in the day.

In his condolence message, President Uhuru described the deceased as a great man who has left a legacy of working for peace and understanding between Kenyans of different faiths.

“I join the Catholic Church in mourning a great religious leader whose exemplary service calls for emulation by others,” said Uhuru in his condolence message.

“In this hour of sorrow, and on behalf of the people and Government of Kenya, I convey my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and the family and friends of the late Bishop Korir.

Bishop Korir’s work for peace and understanding between Kenyans of different faith deserves the warmest commendation,” he concluded.

The late Bishop played a pivotal role in restoration of peace in the Rift valley after 2007/2008 post-election clashes.

A memorial mass will be held today [Monday] at 1pm at the Eldoret Cathedral where he served.
