Chebukati : UNDP had offered to procure the ballot papers, but Al Ghurair will print them due to time constraints

The IEBC has given a detailed update on the commission’s preparation to run the presidential repeat election.

The commission, through its chairman Mr. Wafula Chebukati, said they will include experts from the UN and the commonwealth, and also representatives of each candidate to oversee the ICT operations of the commission.

Mainstream media will also play a big role in covering the announcement of results in all the 290 constituency tallying centers.

“The commission will provide access to accredited media houses to cover results announcements at all levels. Media will be encouraged to show a live feed of the verified results,” the commission says.

IEBC said that United Nations and Development Program (UNDP) had offered to procure ballot papers and forms for the IEBC, and the request had been passed to the Treasury and is awaiting a response.

NASA had launched a set of demands which included cancellation of a two-year contract earlier awarded to Al Ghurair for the printing of August 8 ballot papers.

Chebukati, however, insisted that despite the UNDP having offered to procure the ballot papers and forms, the commission is bound by a two-year contract with the Dubai-based Al Ghurair Company.

Mr. Chebukati added that his commission will take action on some Returning Officers implicated in the court ruling and others will be shuffled.

He said that the transmission system has been reconfigured to ensure no results are transmitted without a scanned image of Form 34A.

“All forms 34A will be reprinted with the candidate and polling station names,” Mr. Chebukati said.

Forms transmission will be done by scanning the result forms, transferring the scanned documents through a safe IP address that will be secured and/or password-protected.
