Kenyan athlete chides Olympic marathon champion Jemima Sumgong over doping claims

By Jamhuri News Reporter

A Kenyan athlete has expressed her disappointment with Rio Olympics Marathon champion, Jemima Sumgong, after failing a doping test two weeks ago, Reuters reports.

2013 world 3,000m steeplechase champion Milcah Chemos on Saturday in London said that such headlines coming from a Kenyan athlete paint the nation’s athletes with a lot of shame.

“It is a big shame to us Kenyan athletes and Kenyans in general,” Chemos said adding “we are lost for words.”

She said that every athlete should be inquisitive to know what type of drug is injected into her body.

Chemos said more often than not, athletes have found themselves in the jaws of failing in their athletic career for trusting blindly.

“Any athletes allowing doctors to inject them without knowing what is going into their bodies are reckless and irresponsible. Athletes must know that they are responsible for what they take.”

She insisted that every professional athlete must insist on knowing what the doctor injects to her body.

“Athletes must insist on knowing what their doctors are prescribing for them. This is mandatory for professional athletes,” added the 2013 world 3,000m steeplechase champion.

Sumgong hit the headlines two weeks ago after reports of her failing the doping test reached the media. The test was carried out by IAAF, worlds athletics ruling body.

She was the first Kenyan woman to win an Olympic marathon title at the Olympics last year held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. She has also won another title in the London Marathon.

The 32-year old athlete has been suspended from participating in any event and she remains conspicuously absent in the London Marathon where she was expected to defend her title.

Sumgong is awaiting the results of her B sample. It tests positive like the first one; he career goes down the drain as she will be banned for four years.

Another Kenyan marathon Champion, Rita Jeptoo, has been banned from participating from any event after she failed the doping test.
