Polygamous MPs agitate for medical insurance for other wives and girlfriends

The National Assembly.

A section of MPs in the 11th Parliament have united in a bid to have the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) bring back the old pay structure.

They say this will cater for their other wives needs unlike the proposed pay structure which has scrapped their allowances, and annual sh5 million car grant.

Speaking on Thursday during the conclusion of their induction at a city hotel, Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala who raised the issue said the 11th Parliament is poorly remunerated compared to previous houses.

“In the 10th Parliament, this House was covering our many wives and the children of these women and girlfriends. This cover must be brought back,” quipped Wanjala, a polygamist according to Nairobi News.

Kiminini MP Dr. Chris Wamalwa, Millie Odhiambo (Suba North) and Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town) concurred with Wanjala.

The SRC in its harmonization of salaries, allowances and benefits of state officers stipulate medical cover for state and public official is only applicable to one spouse and four children under the age of 25 years.

In the new pay structure, an MP is granted sh10 million in patient medical cover, sh300, 000 outpatient medical cover, sh150, 000 for maternity and sh75, 000 for dental care.

Further, a monthly salary of sh621, 250 up from 710, 000 and sitting allowances, car grant scrapped.

Kaluma said it is unfair for only one wife to be covered medically while the other wives in case of polygamous legislator are left uncovered by the current medical scheme.
