Sonko trending on a winning streak as Kenneth cries foul in Nairobi gubernatorial race

By Pharis Kinyua: Jamhuri News

Nairobi Gubernatorial hopeful, Mike Sonko is on a winning streak for the city’s governorship.

Results reaching our news desk at 12:24 pm ET/ 7:24 pm Kenyan time, Sonko had extended a huge lead over his main opponent, Peter Kenneth. Sonko has so far garnered 94, 290 votes against Kenneth’s 39, 929 votes.

He is leading in most constituencies within the city. However, Kenneth has dismissed the primaries citing the exercise was marred by irregularities which may cost him a win. He said that he is done with the nominations and appealed to Jubilee Party to call for a fresh exercise in the city.

At the same time, Sonko had said that should he lose, he would vie for the seat as an independent candidate.

But as results continue trickling into Nyayo stadium which is the county’s tallying center, all indications point to a winning streak for the Nairobi Senator.

The two leaders contesting for a Jubilee ticket have been embroiled in a  bitter political war. Efforts by top Jubilee leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to bring the two to a consensus on who among them should step down.

Both of them maintained that the last word lies with the voters of Nairobi.

While Kenneth had given a more elaborate manifesto for his vision for Nairobi than Sonko, the Senator has risen above him and he still remains the eye candy for Nairobi electorate.

If he wins, Sonko will face off with incumbent city governor Evans Kidero whom he has accused of mismanaging the county and massive corruption at the city hall.

Sonko has vowed to restore the city’s glory and end frequent battle between city inspectorate officers and hawkers, which has become an eyesore in Kidero’s administration.
