Embaskasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has been released after spending two nights at Parklands Police Station.

His released was brokered by Nairobi Senator Joshnson who took an undertaking of Sh104, 000 and a commitment to produce the MP in court on Monday at 8am.

Speaking shortly after his release, Sakaja said that it was wrong for the police to arrest the MP in spite of the fact he is an opposition-leaning politician.

“No political leader should be arrested unlawfully because of his political party be it NASA or Jubilee,” said the Senator according to Citizen Digital.

Sakaja had been flanked by NASA MPs among them Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, Mathare legislator Anthony Oluoch, Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga and former Embakasi South MP Irshad Sumra.

Babu was arrested on Friday outside Parliament buildings over assault and taken to Parklands Police Station.

Yesterday, SONU chair Jamal Safi mobilized a battery of students from the varsity’s School of Law in Parklands to protest the release of the MP and a former Student leader at the same institution.

Jamal faulted the police for trying to intimidate the MP. “Babu is not wrong.”

The Embakasi legislator is not new to controversy.

Last year, he was arrested severally on accounts of assaulting a fellow student and spent several nights behind bars after issuing derogatory statements directed at President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Mother Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

After appearing at the Milimani Law court and was released on bond, he was whisked away by police and locked up before he was arraigned at Kibera Law court to answer to charges of assault.

In the charges, he is alleged to have assaulted a voter in his constituency.
